Buying a Pre-Owned Rolex in London: What to Check
Buying pre-owned is often the quickest way to get the Rolex you actually want. Many popular models are hard to buy new without a long wait, and the pre-owned market also opens up discontinued references and earlier dial variations. But a watch at this level deserves a careful look before you buy. Here's what we'd check.
1. Know the exact reference
Every Rolex model has a reference number, and small differences between references (bezel material, bracelet, movement, dial) can make a big difference to value and desirability. Make sure the reference matches the watch in front of you, and that the dial, bezel and bracelet are correct for that reference.
2. Box and papers
A "full set" usually means the original box and the warranty card or papers. It isn't essential, and plenty of excellent watches come without them, but a full set adds provenance and usually adds value. Check that the serial number on the papers matches the watch.
3. Condition
- Case and bezel. Look for heavy scratches, dents or signs of over-polishing, which can soften the sharp edges of the case.
- Bracelet. Older bracelets can "stretch", with visible sag between the links. It's normal with age but worth knowing about.
- Dial and hands. These should be clean and consistent. Replacement parts aren't always a problem, but they should be disclosed.
- Crystal. Chips or deep scratches on the glass should be noted.
4. Service history and timekeeping
Ask when the watch was last serviced and whether there are records. A well-running automatic Rolex should keep good time, and any recent service is a plus.
5. Buy from someone you can visit
The single best protection is buying from an established dealer you can meet in person, who will let you handle the watch, answer questions directly and put the details in writing. Be wary of prices that look too good to be true.
