Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: What's the Difference?

Lab-grown diamonds have changed the engagement ring world in the space of a few years, and it's now one of the first things couples ask us about. Both options can make a beautiful ring. The right choice depends on what matters most to you.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond is made of the same material as a natural diamond, with the same hardness, the same sparkle and the same physical and chemical properties. The only difference is where it formed: a natural diamond grew deep in the earth over millions of years, while a lab-grown diamond is created in a controlled environment over a matter of weeks. Even an experienced jeweller can't tell them apart by eye; it takes specialist equipment.

They are not the same as simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite, which are different materials that look similar to diamond.

How are they graded?

Both natural and lab-grown diamonds are graded on the same 4Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. Reputable stones come with a certificate from an independent laboratory such as the IGI or GIA, which also states whether the diamond is natural or laboratory grown. Always ask to see the certificate. You can read more in our guide to the 4Cs.

The main differences

  • Price. Lab-grown diamonds typically cost a fraction of a natural diamond of the same size and quality. For many couples, that means a noticeably larger or higher-grade stone for the same budget.
  • Rarity. Natural diamonds are finite and each one is unique in its history. For some people that story is a big part of the meaning of an engagement ring.
  • Long-term value. Natural diamonds have traditionally held their value better. Lab-grown prices have fallen as production has increased, so they are best thought of as a beautiful stone to enjoy rather than something to resell.
  • Appearance. There is no visible difference. Both will look stunning in the same setting.

Which should you choose?

If you want the biggest, brightest stone your budget allows, a lab-grown diamond is hard to beat. If rarity, tradition and long-term value matter more to you, a natural diamond may feel right. There's no wrong answer, and many couples find it helps to see both side by side before deciding.

We work with both natural and lab-grown diamonds, including IGI certified stones, and can set either in any of our engagement ring designs. You can also browse our loose diamonds.
